Chapter 5 - Environmental Resilience

AbstractThis chapter discusses environmental resilience, with examples of issues to be addressed after an environmentally traumatic event. Significant examples of these issues include water pollution, damage to flood mitigation systems, erosion and depletion of wildlife habitats. Louisiana is considered to be a high-risk state environmentally, in need of intense remediation and conservation measures. Future housing development plans, repair and replacement of levees and dams, and other barriers to flooding and erosion are addressed with some reference to climate change. The text includes ways in which striking a balance between maximizing land use and protection of the ecosystem can be achieved.
