Highlights•NJ1 was a novel highly selective and sensitive fluorescent turn-off probe for Cu2+.•The fluorescence of this probe could be quickly recovered with the addition of H2S.•This monitoring system based on complex NJ1Cu formation–Cu2+ displacement approach.•NJ1 could be used for Cu2+ and hydrogen sulfide detection in living cells.
