Highlights•Prolonged exposure therapy reduces anxiety-linked behavior in naïve stressed rats.•In Stress and Stress-PET, a phasic change in IGF-1R was linked with a depletion of CaMKIIα.•Chronic stress exposure caused synaptic changes involving an upregulation of small ion conductance channels (KCa2.2).•Prolonged exposure therapy increased brain microglia activation past the naïve stress level.
