Highlights•Kneeling Nun Tuff is a >900 km3 deposit of a 35.3 Ma super-eruption in New Mexico.•ID-TIMS dates of KNT zircon reveal long, >1 My growth of the magma reservoir.•Zircon compositions vs time show complex magma storage mostly at high crystallinity.•Conditions varied as a function of proximity to recharge heat supply.•Eruption preceded by ca. 50 ky of increased recharge and crystal mush rejuvenation.
