Structural variation in psocopteran wing-coupling mechanisms

AbstractThe structural complexity of psocopteran wing-coupling mechanisms can be related to the position of the wings in repose. Three categories are recognized, which broadly parallel taxonomic divisions, and which involve a progression from horizontal to almost vertical wing holding, with corresponding increase in complexity of “repose-coupling” mechanisms. Examples of these, and of “flight-coupling” structures on the forewings of a range of psocid species are noted and figured.
