Highlights•The S2TyrZ intermediate is trapped on the onset of the S2 to S3 transition.•An intermediate trapped at 250 K in the S3 to S0 transition is ascribed to S3TyrZ.•Both metalloradical intermediates are notably stable at cryogenic temperatures.
