Abstract:Neural networks are adaptive computer programs. the algorithms behind these programs resemble the inner structure of the human brain but they are much less complex. Since the 1990s components of machines and also complete production systems have been optimized and controlled by applying neural nets. The biological background of neural nets is briefly explained, followed by a description of simple computer algorithms applying these principles. training methods for neural networks, i.e. the backpropagation algorithm, are outlined. the chapter concludes with selected examples of successful applications of neural networks to solve textile-related problems.
