AbstractThis section covers the general toxicological effects of acids and alkalis. These effects may occur alone or may occur in conjunction with other toxicological effects. Thus mixed toxidromes may occur. Many toxic substances are acids and alkalis that are capable of producing a combination of site of first contact chemical burns and systemic effects (notably hydrofluoric acid, phenols [aka carbolic acid], cresols, formic acid, phosphoric acid, monochloroacetic acid, and oxalic acid).
