Knowing that a career has to be managed and that doing so is a kind of an extra job can help an employee assess his or her current situation. Learning to continuously identify one's own goals and if and how they can be reached in the current job situation is part of good career management. This chapter focuses on the comparison of employer and employee goals. Employers appreciate that employees evaluate their goals and their job situation. For employers, a satisfied employee means a more productive employee. An employee becomes a key player for his or her own success and satisfaction by identifying personal and professional goals. It is wise to review the situation at regular intervals so one knows whether personal goals can be reached and if one is on the right path. Part of the review also includes an assessment of the future prospects. Satisfied employees focus on development and opportunity, growth, and success. They are likely to stay excited about their jobs and up-to-date in their field. This scenario creates a competitive workforce and adds to the competitiveness of the company, an optimal situation for all parties involved. To successfully manage one's career one should understand the importance of managing one's career, know one's goals, know the company goals, and understand whether or not one's goals are realistic.
