AbstractBy applying principles based on isolobal relationships, it is possible to prepare a variety of transition element complexes with heteroor homo-nuclear metal – metal bonds bridged by carbene CRR or carbyne CR ligands. Methods of synthesis, structural studies, and reactivity of these species will be described, involving metals from groups IV (Ti) to VIII (Pt) of the periodic classification. Recent studies include species with bridging S, Br or O atoms, as well as CR groups, e.g. [Fe2W(μ2-CR)-(μ3-S) (CO)7(·-C5H5)] or [ReW2(μ2-CR)2(μ2-Br) (μ2-O) (cO)3(·-C5H5)2], and on compounds obtained by using [(·-C5H5)2Ti(μ-C1) (μ-CH2)A1Me2] as a methylene transfer reagent. Also reported will be research using the groups Au(PPh3) and Cu(·-C5Me5) to obtain metal- non-metal clusters, e.g. [Au2Ru3(μ3-S) (CO) 8(PPh3)3] and [CuPtW(μ3-CR) (CO)2(PMe3)2 (·-C5H5) (·-C5Me5)].
