Fluctuations and clustering in relativistic heavy ion interactions

AbstractThe method of scaled factorial moments is used to study the fluctuations in the nuclear fragmentations of 197Au at 10.6 A·GeV by disentangling the peripheral from more central events. Intermittent behavior is found only in the midcentral processes. Clustering size distributions also exhibit power-law behavior. These observations indicate that the nuclear system might have gone through a phase transition.
