AbstractFollowing a review of the literature which is available on the thermal design of courtyard housing, the relationships between the variation of the parameters of courtyard forms and the corresponding thermal performance are investigated as a basis for studying systematically the thermal characteristics of courtyard houses in hot dry climates. Solar radiation is considered to be the primary source of excitation and a mathematical model is developed which simulates the interaction taking place at the external surfaces of the wall surrounding the courtyard space. This enables the generation of detailed information on the irradiation load on these surfaces.
