Abstract:
AbstractNovel strategies in molecular biology can now isolate single genes unique to central neurons. A parallel approach to identify loci which determine specific excitability patterns in the brain, presents a complementary framework to explore gene expression within the developing mammalian central nervous system. A search for mutations in mice with abnormal cortical synchronization is a simple method to isolate functional neuromodulatory loci and to examine molecular diseases of neuronal integration at a cellular level. Analysis of one of these genes, tg, is beginning to yield unexpected clues into mechanisms of inherited epileptogenesis.
