A preliminary study of a flow method for following heterogeneous polymerization

AbstractA flow apparatus for the study of Ziegler polymerization was constructed. The design and instrumentation of this apparatus has proved quite satisfactory. The work was aimed at studying the reaction of various monomer systems on the same catalyst surface. Difficulties were encountered in preliminary experiments regarding the removal of polymer formed from the catalyst bed, and maintaining the catalytic efficiency of the bed. The resistance to flow exerted by the catalyst bed was found to be a sensitive measure of deposition of polymer, which may be useful in future theoretical investigations.
