Highlights•The study deals with geochemistry and tectonic provenance of the Gabir sandstones.•Proterozoic granites, metagabbros and metavolcanics are the sources.•They were deposited in an active continental margin of a synrift basin.•CIA values indicate low to moderate weathering, in cold and/or arid climate.•Also, their deposition constrained the beginning of the faulting.
