Direct redox intercalation of ferrocene in α-VOPO4

AbstractA direct redox intercalation of iron-biscyclopentadiene (ferrocene) in α-VOPO4 has been carried out for the first time without help of any extra-reducing agent. The reaction only involves gaseous ferrocene Fecp2 and solid α-VOPO4. By chemical analysis, the composition of the obtained intercalation compound is found to be VOPO4, O.22 Fecp2. Mössbauer spectroscopy shows that a complete electron transfer occurs between the guest molecule Fecp2 and the vanadium atoms of the host lattice. The magnetic properties, investigated by ESR and by magnetic susceptibility measurements, confirm the presence of the resulting Fecp2+ and VO2+ paramagnetic ions interacting only via dipolar couplings.
