Highlights•The adipokine AFABP significantly increases with increasing eGFR category.•Renal dysfunction is a strong positive predictor of AFABP in chronic kidney disease.•AFABP is increased after unilateral nephrectomy as compared to pre-surgical values.•AFABP is increased in rats after nephrectomy as compared to sham-operated rats.•Measures of renal function are major determinants of AFABP serum levels.
