Highlights•Sodium-copper hexacyanoferrate-modified magnetic nanoparticles were successfully prepared.•The nanoparticles have an excellent adsorption capacity with good selectivity to Cs.•The nanoparticles effectively removed Cs over a wide pH range.•The nanoparticles could be separated rapidly by an external magnetic field.•The magnetic absorbent shows promise in the treatment of 137Cs-contaminated water.
