Abstract:

Highlights•Nanometer sized tungsten tips are conformally coated with nano-crystalline diamond.•The coating shows a columnar structure with 20 nm sized crystallites.•Nitrogen gas flow is used to control the local seeding density.•At the tip apex, an elevated sp2 to sp3 ratio of the diamond film is measured.•Graphitic paths between diamond grains are identified.
