Highlights•Fabrication of suitable waveguides in Cr:LISAF crystals by ultrafast laser inscription.•Quasi TE and quasi TM propagation modes are supported at these guiding structures.•Optical properties of Cr3+ ions were found similar for both, waveguide and bulk.•The upper limit of induced stress was estimated in the resultant waveguides.
