Bone marrow morphology in the myeloproliferative and dysmyelopoietic syndromes is complex and difficult. Features of most of the myeloproliferative disorders are not unique and may mimic one another and other unrelated disorders. Careful attention to previous biopsy material and clinical and laboratory data is mandatory. In the myelodysplastic disorders careful attention to both bone marrow smears as well as sections is mandatory because these disorders also may mimic other less serious illnesses.A cautious approach to the diagnosis of all these disorders is warranted.
