Abstract:
Highlights•Social networking presents opportunities for diffusion of responsibility and so research on prosocial behavior.•Participants viewed a mock social networking site embedded with requests for help.•We manipulated the number of other people online and the time since the request was made.•Offers to help were influenced by the number of ‘others’ online as well as the time of posting the request.•Offers to help were more consistent with the social influence model than the social impact theory.
