Abstract:
Highlights•A role for environmental enrichment (EE) on alcohol intake is suggested.•EE has a protective role in the mPFC neurons and motivation for alcohol intake.•This effect is dependent from whether the animals were reared grouped or isolated.•EE has a protective effect on neural maintenance even in previously isolated rats.•For alcohol intake, isolation is a strong stressor from which EE has no effect.
