Highlights•Distribution of Li4Ti5O12 and Li7Ti5O12 phases in a LTO secondary particle was clarified by STEM–EELS.•Li-inserted Li7Ti5O12 phases can be clearly identified by Li-K, Ti-L and O-K edge spectra.•Separated two-phase distribution was observed in a half Li-inserted secondary particle.•Li-insertion reaction should propagate between primary particles sequentially.
