Highlights•This study concerns the spatial and temporal variation of crop residual burning (CRB) for the whole China, and the major sources of CRB have been clarified.•A 1–6 day's hysteresis has been found in the daily temporal analysis when the CRB makes an impact on aerosol pollution.•Evident aerosol increase in the CRB seasons has been found in the regions.
