Highlights•Heterosexual and homosexual participants completed questionnaires on mating psychology.•In general, heterosexual women and lesbians appear to share aspects of mating psychology.•Heterosexual and gay men show greater variation.•Homosexual mating strategies are not simply a reversal of heterosexual strategies.
