Highlights•Significant surface modifications can be induced for commercially pure Zr by HCPEB.•Prior equiaxed grains are replaced by ultra fine plates with dense nanotwins after irradiation.•Prior bimodal basal texture is gradually changed to a <112¯0>//ND fiber texture.•Microstructural and textural variations lead to increased hardness in irradiated specimens.
