Highlights•The synthesis and characterization of GNR was performed.•Study of the binding of MPA onto gold nanorods surface was performed.•FTIR study was made to decide if MPA replaces the CTAB onto the surface of GNR.•The conclusion: a large part of CTAB is replaced by MPA (62%).
