Highlights•An I/O centric architecture is proposed to execute data transfer tasks.•Optimized thread scheduling makes more efficient utilization of the underlying multicore platform.•A large virtual file mechanism is implemented to address the lots-of-small-files (LOSF) problem.•Multiple optimization mechanisms, including–zero copy, asynchronous I/O, pipelining, batch processing, and pre-allocated buffer pools–are integrated to enhance performance.
