Highlights•Ovariectomized female rats were replaced with estradiol (E) at estrous cycle nadir or peak levels.•Rats were injected with insulin or vehicle after start of caudal fourth ventricular L-lactate infusion.•Lactate fully or partially reversed hypoglycemic hyperglucagonemia and -corticosteronemia.•Lactate caused dissimilar changes in dorsomedial hypothalamic norepinephrine between E groups.•E signal strength defines unique metabolic transmitter targets of lactoprivic signals.
