Adsorption of some gases by coordinatively unsaturated surface compounds on silica gel

AbstractN2, CO, O2, NO and NO2 were added to the coordinatively unsaturated surface compounds of chromium(II), manganese(II), iron(II), cobalt(II) and nickel(II) on silica gel. The heat of adsorption was measured with a chromel/alumel thermocouple. The heat of adsorption of N2 and O2 and the heat of oxidation of adsorbed NO by O2 decreased across the series from chromium(II) to nickel(II), while the heat of adsorption of CO and NO showed a significant minimum at manganese(II). The heat of the CO adsorption was compared with values calculated from the adsorption ratios of CO by Bjerrum's half-n method. The results of both methods agreed within the error limits.
