On electron cyclotron resonance and the detection and spectral resolution of far-infrared radiation

AbstractIt is shown that the particle energy perturbation in a short-duration interaction between a weak radiation field and a system of free electrons in cyclotron motion about a homogeneous magnetic field can be observed. The interaction offers a means of radiation detection with the characteristics of a tunable high-resolution spectrometer. With high magnetic fields the process has particular significance to the far-infrared spectral region. In this context a practical system is proposed and analysed.
