Highlights•Sorption of PFASs of C5 or longer depends on the pH or on the SOM bulk net charge.•For C5–C8 PFCAs, SOM bulk net charge is strongly related to sorption.•For longer-chained PFASs, pH is a better predictor of sorption.•Cation effects are evident only for shorter-chained PFASs.•Longer-chained PFASs probably bind preferentially to the humin fraction of SOM.
