Abstract:

Highlights•Bacteria used 0.4–50 fold more C than did fungi, and CUE varied from <0.05 to 0.50•Mineral N and low pH suppressed bacteria, which resulted in higher fungal growth.•CUE was higher in soils with low fungal-to-bacterial growth ratios.
