Abstract:

SummaryA revision of the 1995 Data Protection Directive of the European Union is currently in preparation. It is argued that the revised version should take explicitly and adequately into account the special requirements for personal data collection, storage and use needed in epidemiological research activities such as health services auditing, studies involving disease registries and investigations of public health emergencies.
