Highlights•Taxol and baccatin III production was higher in T. media than T. globosa cells.•T. media cell cultures increased taxol production 80-fold when treated with CD + CORO.•T. globosa cells excreted more than 90% of their taxanes to the medium.•A limiting step of taxol biosynthesis is probably controlled by the BAPT gene.•Taxol biosynthetic gene expression was enhanced in CD + CORO-treated T. media cells.
