A residual amount of random non-uniformity in the properties of nominally identical products is inevitable, due to the stochastic nature of manufacturing processes. Such differences are usually ignored, since they are small and are within the tolerance limits. However, they are not always negligible in the case of turbine blades coupled together through the elasticity of the disc or shroud bands. It is shown that, under certain conditions, a small degree of imperfection can give rise to the localization of vibration around one or two blades, and that such a localization has the potential for inducing unexpected failure of rogue blades.
