Highlights•Transient flow in a pipe closed with a viscoelastically attached valve is examined.•Analytical solution to the wave equation for assumed boundary conditions was found.•Numerical study on water hammer runs for various valve attachment parameters is done.•Influence of stiffness and damping of the spring on water hammer runs is determined.•The design was found possible to be effective for mitigation of water hammer hazards.
