Achievements to be expected from new developments in tumour radiotherapy
Review articleOpen access

AbstractA number of possibilities for future improvements of radiotherapeutical tumour treatments are evaluated, with a view of indicating areas where integration of experimental and clinical research might be most fruitful. Such areas are the combinations of radiotherapy with surgery and with chemotherapy, to be based on improved insights into various factors which determine the radioresistance of tumours, e.g. intrinsic cellular radiosensitivity, cell proliferation kinetics, repair of potentially lethal damage, and the presence of anoxic cells. Finally some aspects of time-dose relationships are discussed.
